The Pine River Anthology began as an all-English publication and this year, for the first time in decades every submission is a visual art piece. Imagination gives us hope and identity. Our stories manifest themselves in the art that we create. Each story is as unique as the artist, and no one interpretation of a piece is correct. However, it is through these differences in perspective that we are able to come together and form honest connections. Empathy and imagination are our guiding keys. We, at Pine River Anthology, invite you to explore our publication and step into the minds of our talented, featured artists. Thank you.

Art is at the core of our existence. It is present in every pen stroke and every movement. The graceful dancing figures on our cover is more than a few zen brushstrokes: it is the Chinese symbol for "Sway." The image bridges the gap between art on the page and living art, showing that what divides the two is, in actuality, nonexistent. Art is living and breathing; art is transcendent language; art is now. We, at Pine River Anthology, welcome you to explore and dance inside each piece within our publication, and on our website.

Art crosses boundaries. It combines thoughts, feelings, and experiences with graphic representations. The final result of this amalgamation is creation. Our theme, Synergy, celebrates the process resulting in works such as paintings, sculptures, music, writing and new media. Our cover presents an interactive page where our audience can pour their own emotions and thoughts into creating something unique and special; they can connect with the pieces of art inside by creating their own piece of art outside. Color this page in whatever way you see fit; however the design moves you - this is really what Synergy is all about. We, at Pine River Anthology, welcome you to explore and create your own meaning of the pieces within our publication, and on our website.

As Alma College's annual literary and visual arts magazine, Pine River Anthology is the joint production of the Art & Design, English, and New Media Studies departments. This publication showcases works of traditional and digital fine art alongside creative writing, serving as a way to involve our college in a campus-wide exploration of the arts. In the creation of art we are always crossing the lines of our individual media to draw from and, in turn, inspire other artists. Our theme, BRANCHING, celebrates this act of reaching across these categories to create an experience greater than the sum of each discipline on its own. In this magazine, we connect the realm of the visual to the realm of the literary, and complement pages and ink with digital elements found on our website. The result is a synthesis of the arts that, like the branches of a tree, never ceases to expand, transform, and thrive.

“The blending of traditional and digital methods to create a work of art.” Pine River Anthology is an annual publication by Alma College, created between the departments of Art & Design, English, and for the first time ever, New Media Studies. This magazine showcases creative works of fine art and writing and serves as a way for our college to take part in a campus-wide involvement in the visual and literary arts. With the world of technology rapidly growing, the arts are evolving alongside it. In both writing and art, we begin to see digital components intermingle with traditional forms, merging together to create something new and exciting. Stories now become interactive and still images are given motion. This adds another layer of depth and dimension to Pine River Anthology and takes the experience one step further. The magazine is expanding its pages beyond the printers and ink to include digital elements like sound and motion that would previously be impossible to do in a traditional sense. We, at Pine River Anthology, welcome you to experience tradigital art and writing here, in this publication, and at our new website.
