Abstract
In the worlds of art and literature, and more, individuals often make work to fulfill a deep and overwhelming desire to create. To paraphrase a core point of Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act: A Way of Being, the gap in our knowledge of whatever subject matter is sometimes exactly what lights the fire of curiosity—pushing us to question what we know, to create in order to explore and research potential answers, and to keep going in spite of uncertainty.
The anthology enters its 71st year in 2024 with the theme Lacuna, a blank space or missing part.
The works printed in this edition grapple with this theme by affirming or challenging it, and they are carefully paired together to bring out each piece’s strengths. The staff hopes to bridge gaps between individuals and connect you to these contributions of great artists and writers, uplifting and supporting you at any point in life.
