Abstract
This presentation and research are centrally focused on the campaign strategies used by Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election and whether any of the differences in his campaign led to a change in the public's view of immigration. Throughout this research, the methods and actions carried out by Trump will be examined in depth to gain a profound knowledge of the differences between the Trump campaign and other presidential candidates on both sides of the aisle. In addition, work from scholarly sources will be used to back up claims made for the differences of the Trump campaign in terms of strategy, as well as using polling data to examine the view of immigration in the public's eye. The goal of this research is to provide an overview of the Trump campaign and to examine whether there was a change in the public’s outlook on immigration, and if that could be tied to any of the possible differences in the Trump campaign. Throughout the research, it can be seen that the Trump campaign used unique strategies, including making personal attacks on candidates and other prominent political figures, utilizing social media as a way to have widespread media coverage, and using his controversies as a way to gain more attention. His use of his prior fame, stemming from being a TV personality since the late 1970s, also aided him throughout his first-ever political campaign with zero prior experience. After looking at Donald Trump’s campaign, the argument is made that there were some foundational differences between his campaign and those of other presidential candidates, including those of his Republican allies. The overall goal of this research is to determine if there were any changes in the public's outlook on immigration, and if those could be tied back to Donald Trump’s unique campaign strategies that were mentioned previously.
