Abstract
In this presentation I will be exploring how the principles of medical ethics, with a focus on respecting autonomy, affect the way controversial medical treatments and topics like Medical Aid in Dying (MAID), advanced directives, and the right to refuse treatment are viewed. Under the scope of respecting the autonomy of individuals’ rights, these are all things that should be universally respected, but we will take a look at what the other principles of medical ethics say about them. Finally, I will respond to the possible objections of these principles, explaining why autonomy should trump them all in the grand scheme of the philosophy of medical ethics.
