Abstract
The Pine River appears this spring after a two year respite. Accurately, it is The Pine River, 1962 & 1963, since a thin sheaf of student writing, collected last year by William Glass for publication as The Pine River, 1962, is included in this year's magazine. Doomed not to be published last year, that writing and his editor's forward appear here with this year's work. Considering him, then, my co-editor, I second his remarks. With the lone exception of the two poems by Charles Bross, the writing here was exclusively written last year. Last year's slenderness is this year's emaciation. On the other hand, the artistic contribution to The Pine River, 1962 & 1963, is considerably larger than ever before. I offer special thanks for this to the artists, and to Mr. Kent Kirby, Robert Thornell, and Naarah Crawford for helping to choose the pictures shown here. All were done by students--with the exception of Robert Thornell's haiku drawing--were selected from the Student Art Exhibit of this year. ---- Once again the English Department and Parnassians are happy to present this anthology. You'll find that its format is quite akin to that established under the editorship of Kurt Frevel, whose energies in the three years previous to this did much to influence and ensure the succession of the magazine. A major addition, however, is to be found in the form of contributions from students in the Art Department who have labored at their own sacrifice to record and submit graphic impressions of the writing herein; we welcome their work and are grateful for their willing assistance. While it is true that the publication of this book marks the end of a year of writing for the constituents of the fluctuant band called Parnassians, it is strongly hoped that the book may give impetus, perhaps inspiration, to more active literary effort on the campus. This year the anthology is small, as the amount of written material proffered by and to the group was small, under cover of the adage that better things come in small packages, we present this cross-section of our attempts at creative writing for your enjoyment ... with the wish that it may help to spark the disproving of the latter half of that adage with succeeding issues. Editors traditionally take advantage of their prefatory comments for thank-yous, as editors are traditionally indebted to many who do much of the work, receiving little of the credit. Our particular thanks are due the administration for financing the magazine once again, to a number of scribes, typists, and proofreaders who've made this book tangible, and to some good friends and mentors whose spiritual reassurance carried the very notion of publication this year to a possibility, and thence to The Pine River, 1962.
