Abstract
‘Between Song and Silence: Rhythm and Rest Space in Fiction and Nonfiction’ is a journey into the musicality of fiction and nonfiction, exploring rhythm and rest through the lens of sonic craft, alongside pathways and passages between literary skill and these inherent elements of music. Many authors like to write to music, just as many musicians like to read. While literature and music are separate art forms, there are bridges between them, frequently crossed. Do writers mimic, consciously or subconsciously, the structure and pace of songs and compositions? How does musical technique slip into short story? How can we integrate rest space into literature, just as silence is woven into song and, in visual art, negative space is an element of form? Through an examination of these parallels, I would like to offer insights into the ways in which the writer makes words move on the page, mimicking song and silence, engagement and reflection, movement and pause, life and breath.
