Abstract
Japanese pop idols, or simply J-pop idols, are colorfully expressive performers who specialize in singing and dancing. They’re extremely character and persona driven, and strive to spread positivity and smiles amongst the fans in the audience. J-idol media, whether it be games, anime, or live performances, tends to be upbeat, positive, and happy-go-lucky. Whether it’s Love Live’s theme of always being able to accomplish your dreams, or Project Sekai’s theme of friendship being able to reach others through music, idol media sticks to the safe and stereotypical route. However, the way idols are depicted in media couldn’t be further from how the Japanese performing industry actually operates. There have been numerous cases of idols resorting to suicide due to the pressure of the career, or getting into extreme controversies for simple acts such as dating. Recently, there was a case of a Love Live idol announcing her engagement, and fans reacted by burning plushies of her character in retaliation. At the end of the day, it’s a cutthroat industry that barely has any space for mental health practices.
Despite how terrifying this industry really is, I actually perform as an idol. The term “kaigai idol” refers to performers who aren’t from Japan that take inspiration from Japanese idol shows, usually performing at major gatherings and events like anime conventions. Through my personal idol work, I’ve built a small community around my Youtube channel and I even do live shows at conventions with my performance group, “Yume Connect.” However, I don’t plan on sugarcoating the idol scene with the work I put out. I intend to present things as they actually are. This is why I’m going to produce my own indie animated webcomic about the negative effects the Japanese idol industry’s expectations can have on a young person’s mental health. I’d like to make it a twelve episode psychological horror series with original music all tied to be centered around the story of “Yume Connect.” To launch this project, I plan to make a tiered Kickstarter campaign with physical rewards to get this properly produced.
