Abstract
With Republican control of the federal government resulting in a series of executive orders, legislation, and Supreme Court decisions negatively, the LGBTQ+ community has been negatively impacted. Although a Democratic majority currently controls Michigan’s state government, the future of the LGBTQ+ community in Michigan seems uncertain. “The State of LGBTQ+ Rights in Michigan: A Quantitative Assessment” examines LGBTQ+ rights in Michigan, analyzing legal protections, social acceptance, and the impact of recent political shifts. By using data from the Movement Advancement Project’s Equality maps and policy tallies, The Trans Legislation Tracker, and research on social climate, demographic, economic and health indicators, it aims to assess Michigan's progress compared to other Midwestern states. Because of the unique targeting of the transgender community, particular attention will be paid to the accessibility and legal rights regarding gender affirming care, which is especially at threat. Through this analysis, the paper will provide a comprehensive overview of the progress made and the ongoing struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in Michigan, showing that, while LGBTQ+ rights in Michigan are comparatively well-established, recent attacks are increasingly endangering this support, and important actions must be taken to both safeguard existing rights and push for their expansion. This paper found that, though Michigan has some of the most protections in the Midwest, the current protections cannot be taken for granted, and lawmakers and activists should fight to maintain and expand them, especially in the areas of healthcare and criminal justice. In this increasingly hostile climate to LGBTQ+ rights, Michigan cannot take its past wins for granted, and must continue fighting to ensure full equality for all of its residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
