Abstract
The Pine River Anthology was begun last year as an effort to encourage, stimulate and represent in a published form the creative writing of students and faculty at Alma College. This year, thanks to a budget permitted us by the cooperative council, the anthology makes its first printed appearance. The format must necessarily be inexpensive and the amount of material presented comparatively small. Perhaps the work included may be somewhat less uneven, somewhat more superior than an indiscriminate assembling of college writing might ordinarily be if the number of pages were unlimited. The consideration of space has probably been the major criterion in the editing of this second selection.
The idea behind getting the magazine printed is obvious, and therefore must be repeated. A wider audience amongst faculty, students, and-more important-amongst alumni and friends, is expected to be good for the growth of interest in and criticism of creative writing on the campus. Sincere and able letters of criticism will therefore be greeted with a warmth second only to that reserved for the kind financial patronage which will be vital to the continued appearance of the anthology in printed form.
This particular selection represents the work of some few writers more generously than others, a method entirely the result of electing an editor. Some writers whose work is less mature, if such a comparison can be valid amongst undergraduates, are included, and some omitted, mostly at· whim really, but ostensibly on reasonable grounds. If juniors and seniors are heavily present, let us believe that it is more that they might say "Vale!" than that they are better writers than the worthy underclassmen who are absent. These will, the Lord willing, have an opportunity for audience when they are left to themselves.
The Parnassians believe religiously that Alma College has within its constituency some literate people who will read this magazine, and even some literary people who, praise God, will write for it.
