Abstract
This thesis will show memory as narrative structure, voice, and how context for a
postmemorial narrative reveals character. I will be analyzing character of the protagonists of
the following novels: Bless Me, Ultima, Caramelo, and Echoes of Grace. The novels include
differing examples of memory as a narrative structure such as “nested” memories, parallel
narrative, and a combination of “nested” memories organized into thematic parts. Voice in
memory differs in scope and what it achieves in terms of character. Comparative literary
analysis of textual examples to postmemorial narrative reveal that a character searching for
truth is re-creating their “self” or their “character.”
