Abstract
In last year's foreword Greg Wegner wrote of a "surge in creative writing" on campus -- this year there was an EXPLOSION of excellent writing and art work. Several writers had poems published and a number of art students participated in shows and conventions. The Art Department's critiques revealed an exciting variety of very fine student work -- fitting tribute to the new Clack Art Center.
The poetry and short story contests were both well supported by students. Morgan Ohwovoriole's winning short story Two Hundred and Forty Pennies Make One Pound is printed here as an insert booklet. Morgan is a pre-engineering student from Nigeria who moonlights in prose and poetry.
There have been many contributions to this year's Pine River, both literary and artistic. Several of these are included here, some are not; all of them were deeply appreciated.
Earlier in the term, Conrad Hilberry, at Berea College in Kentucky this year, gave a poetry reading which was preceded by an informal gathering with students on the lawn. He read poems, Tipton read poems, and students read poems. Conrad said later that he was amazed at the quality and quantity of writing done at Alma College. We hope that others, too, will discover that quality writing in the Pine River. This year's Pine River is dedicated to Conrad Hilberry -- a good man and a fine poet.
