Abstract
Topic/ Question: The topic of this research involves the psychological factors that influence an individual’s voting patterns. Mental health and psychological conditions play a vital role on how an individual processes information. Each individual has their own interests, identity, and the way in which they obtain their information. This is then filtered through their psychological conditions which in turn can impact that individuals voting or opinion in which they vote. Goals: The goal of this research project is to be able to analyze the mental health data from each state within the United States, to determine if there is a relationship to how popular a certain party is within that state. If our data is concrete, we hypothesize that the mental health of a state may influence the rise of radical figures within the government. Methods: I plan to take the information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration client-level data and analyze the findings of the mental health within each state listed within their annual Client Level report. I also plan to pull data from each state listed within the annual report to determine their popular parties. With this data, I plan to run analyses to determine if the voting behaviors in each state have a correlation with radical right movements becoming more popular. Expected Findings: Within this research I expect to find a correlation between mental health and radical right movements on the rise. I hypothesize that there will be a relationship between the mental health data of a state and the influence this may have on the way in which a state may vote.
