Abstract
This essay dives into period dramas from the Regency Era in London, England. The essay’s purpose is to answer the question of romantic period pieces, specifically books from that time period, and their influence on modern romantic writing. Not only writing from what’s popular in the current book market, but my own Romantasy writing. Romantasy is a sub-genre of writing that blends the Romance and Fantasy genres in fiction. My thesis focuses on the duality between popular romantic story elements and social norms of the time impacting modern storytelling. A big focal point of this talks about ballroom scenes in specific and the influence these scenes have in romantic writing across books, films, and various forms of media.
I focus a lot of the essay on my own personal experiences with romantic writing. Growing up, romantic stories were the ones that I was drawn to the most. Fantasy romance, romantic comedies, stories of royalty, all are instrumental to my own fiction writing. I talk about the stories that influenced my storytelling as well as my interests. Films that I grew up watching and books that I grew up reading. What I learned from this thesis is that the moments from past period’s stories that focus on character dynamic and tension influence my Romantasy writing the most.
